Tile Count Estimator
Estimate how many tiles you need by combining the total coverage area, the area of a single tile, and an adjustable waste allowance so you can order once with confidence.
Verify measurements with your installer, confirm tiles are available in full cartons, and account for lead times or dye-lot variations before placing the final order.
Examples
- 45 m² floor with 0.093 m² tiles and 12% waste ⇒ 542 tiles
- 22 m² backsplash with 0.036 m² tiles and 10% waste ⇒ 673 tiles
- 180 ft² patio with 1 ft² tiles and 8% waste ⇒ 195 tiles
- 12 m² shower wall with 0.0625 m² tiles and 15% waste ⇒ 222 tiles
FAQ
How do I calculate tile area for rectangles or planks?
Multiply tile length by width using the same units, then convert to square meters or feet to match your coverage area input.
Should I increase waste for diagonal or herringbone layouts?
Yes. Intricate patterns typically need 15–20% waste to accommodate angle cuts and pattern matching.
Can I switch to square feet instead of square meters?
Absolutely. Use square feet for both area and tile size and the calculation remains accurate.
Do grout joints affect the total count?
Grout lines slightly reduce covered area, but the waste allowance usually covers the difference. Increase the buffer if you plan wide grout joints.
Additional Information
- Formula: Tiles = ceil((Coverage area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)).
- Keep coverage and tile size in the same unit system (m², ft², etc.) for accurate ratios.
- If tiles are sold by the box, divide the result by tiles-per-box and round up to the next full carton.
