Sustainable Aviation Fuel Blend Emissions

Estimate lifecycle emissions avoided by replacing a portion of fossil jet fuel with certified sustainable aviation fuel.

Lifecycle emission factor for conventional jet fuel per gallon uplifted.
Emission factor for the certified SAF pathway covering feedstock, production, and transport.
Share of the uplift that is sustainable aviation fuel on an energy-equivalent basis.
Total gallons delivered to the aircraft for the mission.
Defaults to 1.0. Apply >1.0 to reflect contrail and NOx forcing factors in CO2e terms.

Examples

  • 9.57 kg CO2e/gal Jet A, 1.90 kg CO2e/gal SAF, 35% blend, 12,000 gal, multiplier 1.30 ⇒ 41.88 metric tons CO2e avoided
  • 9.57 kg CO2e/gal Jet A, 0.80 kg CO2e/gal SAF, 50% blend, 4,500 gal, default multiplier ⇒ 19.73 metric tons CO2e avoided

FAQ

What lifecycle boundaries should I use?

Use cradle-to-wingtip factors aligned with ICAO CORSIA or your corporate inventory boundary so comparisons remain consistent across reporting cycles.

How do I account for energy density differences?

Most SAF pathways are reported as energy-equivalent gallons relative to Jet A. If your supplier reports neat gallons, convert to energy-equivalent gallons before entering the blend percentage.

Should I include contrail mitigation effects?

Use the optional non-CO2 forcing multiplier to reflect contrail and NOx radiative forcing estimates approved by your sustainability team.

Can the avoided emissions be negative?

Yes. If SAF lifecycle intensity exceeds the fossil baseline, the model returns negative savings, signalling that the pathway fails to deliver a benefit under your assumptions.

Additional Information

  • Emission factors are treated on a per-gallon lifecycle basis, including upstream stages.
  • Blend percentage is capped between 0% and 100% and applies on an energy-equivalent basis.
  • Non-CO2 forcing multiplier defaults to 1.0 when left blank to represent CO2-only reporting.
  • Results are displayed in metric tons of CO2e avoided with two decimal places.
