Upstream Methane Leak Intensity Calculator

Quantify how methane losses compare with upstream production so you can benchmark against OGMP, EPA, or internal intensity targets. Provide leak measurements, daily gas throughput, and optional boe production for liquids-rich assets.

Sum of methane leaks measured in standard cubic feet per hour (scf/h).
Gross gas throughput feeding the facility per day (in million scf).
Optional. Default 0 — enter barrels of oil equivalent per day to report intensity per kboe.
Optional. Default 0.0192 kg/scf at standard conditions.
Optional. Default 27.9 (IPCC AR6 100-year methane CO₂e factor).

Field measurements can fluctuate with wind and operating state. Reconcile results with continuous monitoring data where available.

Examples

  • Leak rate 12 scf/h, production 8 MMscf/d, default density & GWP ⇒ Leak intensity: 0.15% of throughput • Methane released: 0.0055 t/d (2.0158 t/y) • CO₂e impact: 0.1536 t CO₂e/d (56.0376 t/y).
  • Leak rate 2,344 scf/h (≈45 kg/h), production 22,000 boe/d (≈3.66 MMscf/d gas equivalent), GWP 82 (20-year) ⇒ Leak intensity: 0.73% of throughput • Methane released: 1.0800 t/d (394.2000 t/y) • CO₂e impact: 88.5600 t CO₂e/d (32,316.8000 t/y) • Methane intensity: 0.0491 t/kboe.

FAQ

How do I convert OGI camera readings to scf/h?

Use correlation curves from your vendor to translate plume thickness and distance to volumetric flow, then sum leaks observed during the survey for the aggregated input.

Can I input kg/h directly?

Yes—divide your mass rate by 0.0192 kg/scf (or the density value you enter) to convert to scf/h before typing it into the calculator.

How should I treat intermittent pneumatic emissions?

Average the measured high-flow events across their cycle time to derive an equivalent continuous scf/h before adding it to the aggregated leak rate.

Additional Information

  • Default methane density assumes 0.0192 kg/scf at 1 atm and 60°F; adjust for site temperature or gas composition if available.
  • OGMP 2.0 reporting typically uses 100-year GWP (27.9 in AR6) while short-horizon climate accounting may prefer 20-year factors (≈82).
  • Leak intensity expresses unplanned methane as a share of gas throughput—track it monthly to verify LDAR programme effectiveness.
