Liquid Cooling Load Fraction Calculator
Quantify the share of IT heat captured by direct-to-chip, immersion, or rear-door liquid cooling. Provide the total IT load, how much is on the liquid loop, and optional facility assumptions to benchmark air versus liquid mechanical demand.
Planning aid for thermal engineers; validate against detailed CFD or facility design models before procurement decisions.
Examples
- IT load 400 kW, liquid loop 250 kW, PUE 1.30, auxiliaries 12 kW ⇒ Liquid fraction 62.50%, air IT load 150.00 kW, air systems handle 195.00 kW of facility load, liquid path facility load 337.00 kW (includes 12.00 kW auxiliaries).
- IT load 180 kW, liquid loop 90 kW with defaults ⇒ Liquid fraction 50.00%, air IT load 90.00 kW, air facility load 117.00 kW, liquid path facility load 117.00 kW (0.00 kW auxiliaries).
FAQ
Does the calculator include IT load derates?
Provide the derated IT load you expect to run. If you plan to cap racks at 80% of nameplate, use that lower figure in the total IT load field.
How do I treat hybrid racks with both air and liquid?
Split the rack load between air and liquid contributions based on measured branch-circuit or CDU metering, then enter the summed liquid portion in the liquid loop field.
Can I change the default PUE?
Yes. Enter the PUE that matches your design study or operational telemetry. Blank values default to 1.30 to represent a modern efficient facility.
Additional Information
- Result unit: percentage of IT load handled by liquid cooling compared with total IT load.
- Facility load calculations assume the provided PUE applies uniformly across liquid and air segments.
- Auxiliary power is added after applying PUE to the liquid IT load and defaults to 0 kW when omitted.
