Data Center Grid Flexibility Revenue Calculator

Combine nominated demand response capacity, availability factors, and event payments to estimate annual revenue a data center can earn from grid flexibility markets.

Verified megawatts the facility can curtail or shift during grid events.
Annualised capacity revenue offered by the market or utility program.
Total hours you anticipate being dispatched across all events each year.
Performance payment per megawatt-hour delivered during events.
Defaults to 100%. Apply curtailment availability or telemetry derates.

Planning aid only; align with market participation agreements, telemetry requirements, and settlement statements for compliance-grade forecasting.

Examples

  • 18 MW nomination, $52,000/MW-year, 42 dispatch hours, $185/MWh, 92% performance ⇒ $861,120 capacity revenue and $1,290,336 energy revenue
  • 12 MW nomination, $45,000/MW-year, 28 hours, $150/MWh ⇒ $540,000 capacity revenue and $504,000 energy revenue

FAQ

How do I estimate dispatch hours?

Use historical event data from the market operator or utility program and adjust for evolving reliability needs or rule changes in the forward period.

What if the market pays a separate uplift or call option premium?

Add those payments to the capacity rate input or include them as additional revenue outside this calculator to keep the deterministic structure intact.

Can I model battery-backed load shift instead of curtailment?

Yes. Enter the effective MW you can discharge or shift during events and ensure the dispatch hours reflect battery duration and recharge constraints.

Does this include penalties for non-performance?

Penalties are not subtracted automatically. Reduce the performance factor to reflect historical compliance or explicit clawback provisions.

Additional Information

  • Qualified capacity applies performance factors to the nominated MW before calculating payments.
  • Energy revenue multiplies dispatched megawatt-hours by the market’s performance payment rate.
  • Total flexibility revenue sums capacity and energy components for annual planning.
