AWS Glacier Retrieval Cost Calculator
Translate Amazon S3 Glacier restore jobs into a full invoice estimate. Provide the data volume and request count to quantify retrieval fees, request charges, optional data-transfer egress, and the blended cost per gigabyte after the free tier.
Pricing varies by AWS region and tier. Confirm the latest Glacier retrieval, request, and egress rates in the AWS Pricing Calculator before budgeting.
Examples
- Example 1 — 800.00 GB retrieved, 120 requests, default fees, 500.00 GB egress ⇒ Billable retrieval volume: 790.00 GB • Retrieval fees: $7.90 USD • Request fee blocks: 1.00 × $0.05 USD • Data transfer billed: 500.00 GB at $0.09 USD/GB = $45.00 USD • Total retrieval cost: $52.95 USD • Effective cost per GB: $0.07 USD/GB • Free tier applied: 10.00 GB
- Example 2 — 45.00 GB retrieved, 20 requests, $0.020/GB fee, $0.100 per 1,000 requests, no egress ⇒ Billable retrieval volume: 35.00 GB • Retrieval fees: $0.70 USD • Request fee blocks: 1.00 × $0.10 USD • Data transfer billed: 0.00 GB at $0.00 USD/GB = $0.00 USD • Total retrieval cost: $0.80 USD • Effective cost per GB: $0.02 USD/GB • Free tier applied: 10.00 GB
FAQ
How do I account for additional PUT or lifecycle charges?
This tool focuses on retrieval invoices. Add PUT, lifecycle, and storage costs separately when modelling end-to-end Glacier spend.
What if I split the restore into multiple jobs?
Run the calculator for each job and sum the totals. Remember that the free tier resets monthly but is shared across all restores in the account.
Do I need to include request costs for bulk jobs?
Yes. Even bulk retrievals incur the per-1,000 request fee, though the per-GB price drops. Update the per-GB input to the lower bulk rate while keeping request fees in place.
Can I model cross-region restores?
Set the data transfer rate to the published cross-region rate (often $0.02–$0.03/GB) and adjust the volume to match how much data exits the originating region.
Additional Information
- AWS counts each retrieval request toward the per-1,000 fee even if the archive is cached from a prior job.
- Standard tier jobs include a 5% free retrieval allowance when running provisioned capacity; adjust the free tier input to mirror that uplift.
- Expedited requests carry higher per-GB fees and may also require a capacity reservation—add those costs in the per-GB field.
- Data transfer inside the same AWS region is usually free; set the egress volume to zero if restores feed EC2 or EFS in-region.
